Samsung Galaxy S vs iPhone 3GS - The Top 2 Phones in Singapore?

Last Updated on Friday, 07 October 2011 16:49

Samsung’s Galaxy S, announced at the CTIA Wireless show earlier in March this year, has finally been released in June, starting in Asia.

It was not hard to imagine why the Galaxy S was immediately compared to the Apple's iPhone 3GS. First of all, you can definitely see the similarities in their external appearances. It does not help as well that the interface layout and design are ALMOST the same in both the Galaxy S and the iPhone 3GS.  Let's take a closer look at the two models and compare their features.

For the purpose of this article, I will not be going into too technical details but instead be focusing on what everyday users are more concerned about, ie, the size of the phone, weight of the phone, the image display and discernible features such as the internal memory and the camera

Dimensions

The dimensions of Galaxy S are 122.4 by 64.2 by 9.9 millimeters while the iPhone 3GS are 115.5 by 62.1 by 12.3 millimeters. Galaxy S is also considerably lighter than iPhone 3GS with weights of 118 grams and 135 grams respectively. Here are some photos, courtesy of Lapthop.com where they have taken some pictures placing the iPhone 3GS and Samsung Galaxy S together.

Features

Although the internal memory of the iPhone is larger compared to that of the Galaxy S's memory (16MB), the Galaxy S does have the option of using a microSD card that can go as large as 32 GB.

Both models have built in cameras that featured autofocus. Galaxy S comes with a 5 megapixel camera with face and smile detection features while iPhone only has 3.15 megapixels.  As a bonus, the Galaxy S also provides users with entertainment with its built in stereo FM radio while iPhone is limited to music that the user has in the phone.

Display

For display, here is what the phones are using. iPhone 3GS uses a 3.5 inch thin-film transistor touch screen (or TFT for short). For the Galaxy S, it comes with a 4.0 inch Super AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) touch screen. The Super AMOLED differs from many other display technologies in that the layer which detects touch is integrated into the screen rather than being overlaid on top. This is the main reason why the Galaxy S managed to be even slimmer than the iPhone 3GS, has greater touch sensitivity and better image display. If you are still in doubt, do check out the comparison video below:

Conclusion

In my opinion, Samsung has an absolute winner in the Super AMOLED technology that has made its image display much more superior than that of the iPhone 3GS TFT technology and even the iPhone 4 Retina. With a whole host of other advantages over the iPhone 3GS, it might be worth to consider the Galaxy S over the iPhone if you are contemplating your next phone upgrade.
